About This Firearm
The G17 is forty-three years old. The Gen5 is the fifth revision of the design that started the polymer-frame pistol category. The 4.49" barrel and 7.32" slide give it more reciprocating mass than any compact, and owners who shoot both the G17 and G19 back to back consistently describe the G17 as noticeably softer in recoil. The longer slide spreads the recoil impulse over more travel distance. At 24.87 oz unloaded, the gun sits right between the HK VP9 (25.56 oz) and the S&W M&P 9 M2.0 (24.7 oz).
Seventeen rounds in the flush magazine, a 6.5" sight radius for solid iron sight accuracy at 25 yards, and three magazines in the box. The Gen5 Marksman barrel tightened mechanical accuracy over the Gen4. The Picatinny rail accepts full-size weapon lights without adapters. No optic cut on the standard model, which is the gun's clearest limitation against modern competitors like the IWI Masada and Walther PDP that ship optic-ready.
Buy the G17 Gen5 if you want the largest aftermarket ecosystem of any handgun and a gun that every gunsmith in the country knows how to work on. More holsters, sights, lights, triggers, and replacement parts exist for this platform than for anything else. Skip it if an optic cut matters to you. The MOS version adds one, but the Springfield Echelon ships optic-ready with 20-round capacity in a similar package.

Strengths & Limitations
- Largest aftermarket of any handgun. More holsters, sights, triggers, and replacement parts exist for the G17 platform than for any competing firearm. Every accessory manufacturer builds for Glock first.
- The longer 7.32" slide spreads recoil over more travel distance than compacts. Owners who run both the G17 and G19 consistently report faster split times with the G17 using identical ammunition.
- No optic cut on the standard model. The IWI Masada and Walther PDP both ship optic-ready. The MOS version adds one, but that is a separate purchase.
- The 5.8 lb trigger pull is heavier than most full-size competitors. The CZ P-10 F breaks at roughly 4.5 lbs. Aftermarket trigger kits exist, but a full-size gun should not need one.
- Fixed plastic sights are the same inexpensive components that ship on every base Glock. Night sights from Ameriglo or Trijicon should be considered a near-mandatory replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first upgrade most G17 Gen5 owners make?
Night sights. The factory plastic sights are the most common complaint. Ameriglo and Trijicon HD XR are the two most popular replacements among owners. Installation takes 10 minutes with a sight pusher tool, or any gunsmith can do it. After sights, the next most common upgrade is a weapon light, with the Streamlight TLR-1 HL and TLR-7A being the most frequently recommended.
Which weapon lights fit the G17 Gen5 rail?
The G17 Gen5 has a standard Picatinny rail that accepts most full-size weapon lights without adapters. The Streamlight TLR-1 HL and SureFire X300U are the two most common choices. The TLR-7A also fits and sits more flush with the muzzle. Check that any holster is molded for the specific light model, since the light changes the gun's outer profile enough to affect holster fit.
