Product Overview

Fiocchi's Training Dynamics .40 S&W uses a 170-grain full metal jacket truncated cone bullet at 1020 fps, producing 392 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. The 170-grain weight splits the difference between lighter 165-grain loads and the standard 180-grain offerings that dominate the .40 S&W market. That puts this round in an unusual spot. It moves faster than most 180-grain loads while hitting harder than most 165-grain options.

The truncated cone profile is the defining feature of this load. The flat nose cuts sharp, well-defined holes in paper, which makes scoring targets at 7 to 25 yards much easier than with round nose bullets. That same flat nose also feeds reliably in most semi-automatic pistols because the bearing surface contacts the feed ramp at a consistent angle. Fiocchi has manufactured ammunition in Italy since 1876, and their Training Dynamics line is specifically built for high-volume range work.

This load fits best for shooters who spend a lot of time on paper targets and want clean scoring holes without switching to wadcutters. It handles well for timed drills and qualification courses. The 1020 fps velocity and 392 ft-lbs of energy also give it enough pop to run reliably in compact .40 S&W pistols that sometimes struggle with lighter loads. Competition shooters in USPSA or IDPA will find the 170-grain bullet makes power factor with room to spare.

Strengths
  • Truncated cone bullet profile punches clean, easy-to-score holes in paper that round nose FMJ bullets cannot match
  • 1020 fps velocity is faster than most 180-grain .40 S&W loads while producing less recoil than 165-grain high-speed options
  • 392 ft-lbs of energy provides enough gas pressure and slide momentum to cycle reliably in compact pistols
  • Fiocchi's long manufacturing history and Italian production standards result in consistent primer ignition and velocity spreads
Limitations
  • The 170-grain weight does not perfectly mimic the recoil of 180-grain defensive loads, which could affect training transfer
  • FMJTC projectile has no expansion, making it unsuitable for any defensive purpose
  • Italian import means pricing and availability can fluctuate with exchange rates and shipping logistics
