Product Overview

Remington UMC .40 S&W 165gr FMJ is one of the hotter range loads available in this caliber. At 1,150 fps it outpaces the Federal American Eagle 165gr by 20 fps and leaves the PMC Bronze 165gr behind by over 160 fps. That velocity translates to 485 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, which is more than some 180-grain loads produce. Brass casing and a conventional full metal jacket profile keep things simple.

The extra velocity means the slide cycles with authority, and the recoil impulse is noticeably sharper than softer-loaded alternatives. That can be a feature rather than a drawback if you want training reps that build real recoil management skill. Shooters who carry a .40 S&W duty pistol with +P-level defensive ammo will find this UMC load closer to that experience than budget loads running 100+ fps slower.

This round is a natural fit for range qualification drills, draw-from-holster practice, and any shooting where you want to feel genuine .40 S&W recoil rather than a toned-down version. It feeds reliably in Glock, Smith & Wesson M&P, and SIG P320 platforms. The downside of that velocity is more muzzle flip between shots, so newer shooters may want to start with something milder before stepping up to this load.

Strengths
  • Highest velocity (1,150 fps) and muzzle energy (485 ft-lbs) among comparable 165gr .40 S&W range loads
  • Recoil impulse closely approximates full-power defensive ammunition, which improves training transfer
  • Brass cases extract cleanly and are suitable for reloading
  • UMC line is widely stocked at sporting goods stores and online retailers
Limitations
  • Sharper recoil than the CCI Blazer 165gr (1,050 fps) or PMC Bronze (989 fps), which can fatigue newer shooters during long sessions
  • Higher energy means faster slide wear over tens of thousands of rounds compared to milder loads
  • FMJ projectile has no expansion capability, restricting use to range and training only
