Product Overview
Speer Gold Dot 115-grain JHP is the heavy option in .30 Super Carry, leaving the muzzle at 1,150 fps with 338 ft-lbs of energy. Gold Dot is Speer's hollow point for personal defense, loaded here in a nickel-plated brass case. The heavier bullet gives it a power factor of 132, which clears the 125 USPSA minor floor by 7. From a 25-yard zero it is 1.3 inches low at 50 yards and 10.1 inches low at 100.
Remington HTP 100-grain JHP is its direct rival. The HTP is 85 fps faster, yet the two finish within 1 ft-lb of each other at the muzzle, 338 against 339, because the Gold Dot's extra 15 grains of bullet make up for the lower speed. Where they part ways is recoil. In the same pistol the Gold Dot produces about 17 percent more recoil energy than the HTP, a gap you can feel over a string of fast shots in a small carry gun.
Buy the Gold Dot for carry if you want the heavier bullet, or if you also shoot USPSA and want one hollow point that makes minor with room to spare. Recoil-sensitive shooters should carry the HTP instead. For practice, Federal American Eagle 100-grain FMJ produces about 13 percent less recoil energy than the Gold Dot in the same pistol, so expect your carry load to feel stouter than your practice ammo.
