Product Overview
Winchester's White Box M193 fires a 55-grain FMJ at 3180 fps with 1235 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That places it in the middle of the M193 pack. ATS runs slightly slower at 3150 fps, while GGG pushes the same bullet weight to 3330 fps. The 55-grain projectile is the original Vietnam-era ball round specification, designed for 1:12 twist barrels but equally stable in the faster 1:7 and 1:8 twists found on modern ARs. Winchester loads these on the same Lake City production lines that supply the U.S. military.
The M193 specification does one thing well: it fragments reliably above 2700 fps. At close to moderate range, the 55-grain FMJ yaws and breaks apart on impact, creating wound channels that heavier, slower bullets cannot replicate. That fragmentation threshold means this round remains effective out to roughly 150 yards from a 16-inch barrel. The light bullet weight also produces noticeably less recoil than 62-grain M855 loads, which adds up over a long training day. A G1 BC of 0.246 drops off faster than heavier-bullet options past 300 yards, but few shooters run M193 at those distances anyway.
This is bread-and-butter range ammunition. The White Box line has been a staple at gun stores for decades because it works. It feeds reliably in semi-auto and full-auto platforms, produces consistent groups, and costs less than specialty loads. Zeroing a new optic, breaking in a fresh barrel, or running a weekend carbine class all call for ammunition exactly like this. Unlike green tip M855, the lead-core 55-grain FMJ is welcome at virtually every range. For shooters who put thousands of rounds downrange each year, Winchester M193 is the baseline that everything else gets measured against.
- Produced on Lake City military lines, giving this load genuine mil-spec consistency that budget M193 clones often lack
- Lead-core 55-grain FMJ is welcome at virtually every range, unlike steel-core M855 green tip ammunition
- Fragments reliably above 2700 fps, making it effective for defensive applications inside 150 yards from a 16-inch barrel
- Light recoil from the 55-grain bullet weight allows faster follow-up shots compared to 62-grain M855 alternatives
- G1 BC of 0.246 is substantially lower than ATS and GGG (both 0.371), resulting in more drop past 200 yards
- Velocity of 3180 fps sits 150 fps behind GGG's 3330 fps, which limits energy retention at longer distances
- No barrier penetration capability compared to 62-grain M855 loads with steel penetrator cores
- Winchester brand name carries a price premium over comparable ATS and ZSR M193 offerings with similar ballistics
