Sig Sauer markets the Elite Hunter line for hunting. This 140-grain load uses Sig's Elite Hunter Tipped bullet, a polymer-tipped hunting bullet, and leaves the muzzle at 2,950 fps with 2,705 ft-lbs of energy. At 140 grains it sits between the common 130- and 150-grain loads, and its recoil falls between theirs too.
Compared with Hornady's American Whitetail 140-grain, a plain InterLock soft point at the same weight, the Elite Hunter is close to identical at the muzzle. The Sig starts 10 fps faster with 18 more ft-lbs, and the two kick the same in the same rifle. Compared with Nosler's Trophy Grade 150-grain Partition, a heavier bullet with its lead core divided in two by a copper wall, the Elite Hunter starts 150 fps faster. The Partition also kicks about 8 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Elite Hunter if you want a polymer-tipped 140-grain hunting load. Pick the American Whitetail if you would rather have a plain soft point; Hornady markets it for deer season, and at the muzzle the two are nearly the same. Pick the Partition if you want Nosler's divided-core bullet at 150 grains and accept the extra recoil.
