About This Firearm
Springfield designed the Echelon around one number: 20. Twenty rounds flush-fit in the grip without an extended baseplate. The Glock G17 holds 17. The Sig P320 holds 17. The S&W M&P holds 17. Getting three extra rounds without a magazine extension or a longer grip is the Echelon's entire pitch, and it delivers. The magazine geometry uses an optimized follower angle and double-stack, single-feed design to stack 20 rounds in the same 5.5-inch grip height as its competitors.
The rest of the spec sheet holds up. At 24.3 oz and 8.0 inches overall, the Echelon weighs less than the Sig P320 Full Size (28.3 oz) while carrying 3 more rounds. The Variable Interface System optic mount accepts over 10 red dot brands directly without adapter plates. Tritium and luminescent sights ship standard. The 5.5 lb striker trigger sits in the middle of the full-size class. The hammer-forged barrel with Melonite finish should last longer than button-rifled alternatives.
Buy the Echelon if flush-fit capacity is the deciding factor. Skip it if aftermarket depth matters more. The Echelon launched in 2023, so holster options, magazine availability, and third-party accessories are still catching up to platforms like Glock and Sig that have decades of aftermarket development behind them.
Best For
Strengths & Limitations
- Twenty rounds flush-fit in the grip, beating the Glock G17 and Sig P320 by 3 rounds without extended baseplates or a longer grip
- The VIS optic mount accepts over 10 red dot brands directly without adapter plates, eliminating the height stack that plate-based systems add
- Tritium/luminescent sights ship standard, unlike the white dot sights on the S&W M&P M2.0 and Glock G17 Gen5
- Launched in 2023, so holster options and aftermarket accessories are thin compared to Glock, Sig, and M&P platforms with decades of ecosystem development
- Proprietary magazines with no aftermarket alternatives. Extra 20-round magazines are harder to find than Glock or Sig magazines and must be ordered from Springfield or authorized dealers

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the 20-round magazines reliable long-term?
Early owner reports show consistent feeding through 1,000+ rounds with factory magazines. The design is too new for 50,000-round endurance data. The spring tension is higher than 17-round magazines to feed reliably, so loading the last 2-3 rounds into new magazines takes more effort until the spring breaks in. Springfield warranties the gun for life.
Does the Echelon accept Glock or M&P magazines?
No. The Echelon uses proprietary magazines only. Springfield includes one 17-round and one 20-round magazine in the box. No aftermarket magazine options exist yet. Budget for extra factory magazines early, because availability has been inconsistent since the 2023 launch.
