Product Overview

PMC Bronze .40 S&W 165gr FMJ is a mild-shooting range load made in South Korea by the Poongsan Corporation. At 989 fps it is the slowest 165-grain option in the .40 S&W lineup, producing 358 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. For comparison, the Remington UMC 165gr generates 485 ft-lbs and the Federal American Eagle 165gr makes 468 ft-lbs. The PMC runs noticeably softer than both of those loads.

That lower velocity is actually an advantage for certain shooters. If you are working on fundamentals like sight alignment and trigger press, less muzzle flip makes it easier to call your shots and see where the sights were at the moment of firing. Newer .40 S&W owners who are still adjusting to the caliber's reputation for snap will find this load more approachable than hotter alternatives. The brass case feeds and extracts without issues, and the FMJ nose profile is compatible with virtually every .40 S&W pistol on the market.

PMC Bronze is a high-volume training round. If you buy range ammo by the case and burn through it on weekends, the combination of brass cases, reliable ignition, and softer recoil makes it easy to recommend. Reloaders will appreciate the once-fired PMC brass, which is uniform in dimension and holds up well through multiple loading cycles. It is not the load to grab if you want your practice reps to feel exactly like full-power defensive ammo, but for pure marksmanship work it does the job at a fair price.

Strengths
  • Softest recoil among 165gr .40 S&W range loads at 989 fps, which helps newer shooters focus on fundamentals
  • Brass cases are consistent in dimension and reload well through multiple cycles
  • Typically priced lower than Federal American Eagle and Remington UMC, making it a good case-lot buy
  • FMJ profile feeds reliably across the full range of .40 S&W pistols
Limitations
  • 358 ft-lbs of energy is the lowest in its weight class, trailing the Remington UMC by 127 ft-lbs
  • Low velocity means the recoil feel does not match hotter defensive ammo, reducing training carry-over
  • Some shooters report slightly dirtier residue compared to CCI or Federal loads
