About This Firearm

The Taurus 605 is a 5-shot .357 Mag snub built on a compact carbon steel frame. It weighs 24 oz with a 2" barrel and measures 6.5" overall. In basic specs, it matches the Ruger SP101 (26 oz, 2.25" barrel, 5 rounds) closely, but the 605 is built in Brazil on a smaller frame with a less overbuilt design philosophy. The carbon steel construction keeps it heavier than the 17.1 oz Ruger LCRx, which helps with recoil management on full-power loads.

The DA/SA trigger lets you thumb the hammer back for single-action shots, which is a feature the DAO Kimber K6s does not offer. Taurus does not publish a trigger pull weight for the 605, but owner reports describe the DA pull as heavy and gritty from the factory, with noticeable improvement after 200-300 rounds of break-in. The fixed sights are a serrated ramp front and a simple notch rear. They work at defensive distances but are not adjustable for different ammunition weights.

Buy the 605 if you want a steel-frame .357 snub and the Ruger SP101 is out of stock or out of consideration. Skip it if trigger quality out of the box matters to you. The Kimber K6s gives you 6 rounds instead of 5 at 23 oz with a smoother factory trigger, though it is DAO only.

Best For

FAIR
Concealed Carry
At 6.5" overall and 1.41" wide, it tucks into an IWB holster without much fuss. The 24 oz weight is manageable for all-day carry. The Ruger LCRx does the same job at 17.1 oz if weight is the priority, though it kicks harder with magnums.
FAIR
First Revolver
The DA/SA action and exposed hammer teach fundamental revolver skills. The heavy factory trigger requires deliberate practice to shoot well in double-action, and the 2" barrel makes accuracy demanding. New shooters who start here learn trigger control quickly or not at all.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • Carbon steel frame at 24 oz absorbs recoil noticeably better than the 17.1 oz Ruger LCRx when shooting full-power .357 loads
  • DA/SA with an exposed hammer gives you single-action capability that the DAO Kimber K6s lacks
  • Taurus includes a lifetime repair policy that transfers with the gun, which matters for a revolver you may keep for decades
Limitations
  • The factory double-action trigger is widely reported as gritty and heavy. The Ruger SP101 and Kimber K6s both have smoother pulls from the box.
  • Five-round cylinder when the Kimber K6s fits 6 rounds in a frame that weighs 1 oz less and is only 0.12" longer overall

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the break-in period on the Taurus 605?

Most owners report the double-action trigger smooths out substantially after 200-300 rounds. The factory pull starts heavy and gritty, but the contact surfaces wear in with use. Some owners accelerate this by dry-firing in double-action 50-100 times before their first range trip.

Does the Taurus 605 handle a steady diet of .357 Mag?

The carbon steel frame handles magnum pressures fine mechanically. The real limitation is the shooter. At 24 oz with a 2" barrel, full-power .357 loads produce sharp recoil that most people find uncomfortable beyond 20-30 rounds per session. Many 605 owners carry .357 but practice mostly with .38 Special to keep range time productive.
