About This Firearm
The standard 686 exists in the shadow of the 686 Plus, and that is actually the reason some people prefer it. The 6-round cylinder is thinner than the 7-round version, which matters to shooters who wrap their hand around the cylinder gap during a thumbs-forward grip. At 40.3 oz and 9.56" overall, the 686 is nearly identical in dimensions to the Plus but carries 1.1 oz more weight due to the slightly different cylinder geometry.
The L-Frame action is the same as the Plus model. The 4.13" barrel with full underlug and adjustable white outline sights give this gun the same sight picture and forward balance. If the 686 Plus did not exist, this would be the default recommendation for a full-size .357 revolver. Buy the standard 686 if you prefer a 6-round cylinder with traditional proportions. The 686 Plus adds a seventh round in the same frame if that extra capacity matters to you.

Strengths & Limitations
- The L-Frame action is widely considered the smoothest production DA/SA trigger in the .357 Mag class. The double-action pull stacks evenly, and the single-action break is clean.
- At 40.3 oz, the stainless steel frame absorbs .357 Mag recoil well enough for comfortable all-day range sessions. Heavier than the Ruger GP100 by a negligible margin, but the 686's action is notably smoother out of the box.
- The 6-round cylinder keeps traditional proportions. Shooters who grip around the cylinder gap prefer the thinner profile compared to the 7-shot 686 Plus.
- Identical external dimensions to the 686 Plus, which holds 7 rounds. For most buyers, the Plus is the better version of the same gun.
- Same internal lock controversy as all modern S&W revolvers. The lock sits above the cylinder release and is cosmetically unwelcome to many traditional revolver shooters.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy the 686 or the 686 Plus?
Most people should get the Plus. The 7-round cylinder fits in the same L-Frame with no change in weight or dimensions. The only reason to choose the standard 686 is personal preference for the slightly thinner 6-round cylinder profile, which some shooters notice when gripping the gun high.
What grips fit the Smith & Wesson 686?
Any L-Frame round butt grip fits. Popular replacements include the Hogue Monogrip, Pachmayr Gripper, and VZ G10 grips. The factory synthetic grips are functional but most owners upgrade them. Wood grips from Altamont or Ahrends are common choices for aesthetics.
