About This Firearm

Colt brought the King Cobra back in 2019 as a mid-size .357 Mag built around a 3" barrel and a 28 oz stainless frame. It sits between pocket snubs and full-size target revolvers, which is exactly the gap most .357 buyers are trying to fill. The 6-round cylinder is one more than the 5-shot Ruger SP101, and the 3" barrel adds roughly 50 fps over a 2" snub while keeping the overall length at 8". The Hogue overmolded rubber grip tames recoil better than the wood grips found on the Python.

The 4.3 lb single-action pull is heavier than the Python's 3.5 lb break but lighter than most S&W factory triggers. The brass bead front sight and trench rear are simple, fast to pick up in low light, and appropriate for a gun meant for defensive distances. The original King Cobra ran from 1986 to 1998 and built a following among shooters who wanted Colt lockwork without the full-size Python frame. The reintroduction delivers the same idea in a modern package with the addition of a transfer bar safety.

Best For

GOOD
Concealed Carry
At 28 oz and 8" overall, it is compact enough for belt carry under a cover garment. The 3" barrel keeps it shorter than full-size revolvers while giving better ballistics than a 2" snub. The Hogue rubber grip does not print as sharply as wood panels.
GOOD
Home Defense
Six rounds of .357 Mag, a 4.3 lb SA pull for deliberate shots, and a brass bead front sight that picks up ambient light quickly. The 28 oz frame absorbs enough recoil for controlled double-action fire at indoor distances.
FAIR
Range / Target Shooting
The 3" barrel and fixed trench rear sight limit precision work at distance. For deliberate target shooting, the Python's 4.25" barrel, adjustable sights, and 3.5 lb SA trigger are better suited to the task.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • The 6-round cylinder in a mid-size frame gives one extra round over the 5-shot Ruger SP101 without a significant size increase
  • The 3" barrel splits the difference between snub ballistics and full-size bulk, keeping the overall length at just 8"
Limitations
  • The trench rear sight is fast but imprecise. No adjustment for windage or elevation. The S&W 686 ships with adjustable white-outline sights for the same money.
  • No accessory rail for a light. Home defense use in the dark requires a separate handheld flashlight.
  • The Hogue overmolded grip is comfortable but limited in aftermarket options. Colt does not have the same grip ecosystem as S&W or Ruger.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the King Cobra have the same lockwork as the Python?

Same basic Colt V-spring action, but the King Cobra's 4.3 lb SA pull is noticeably heavier than the Python's 3.5 lb break. Both use the re-engineered transfer bar system introduced in 2019. The double-action pull on both smooths out over the first few hundred rounds as the internals wear in.

What holsters fit the Colt King Cobra?

The 2019 King Cobra has different dimensions than the 1986-1998 original, so vintage holsters may not fit. Look for holsters specifically listed for the "new" or "2019+" King Cobra. The 3" barrel and full underlug make it close in size to an S&W K-frame with a 3" barrel, but the cylinder diameter differs enough that dedicated Colt holsters are the safe bet.
