Product Overview
DoubleTap's .45 Colt +P pushes a 255gr hard cast semi-wadcutter to 1,450 fps, generating 1,190 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That's nearly four times the energy of a standard-pressure .45 Colt load. This is a full-power hunting round designed exclusively for modern heavy-frame revolvers like the Ruger Blackhawk, Ruger Redhawk, Freedom Arms Model 83, and similar large-frame guns. Do not fire this in SAA clones, Colt revolvers, or the Taurus Judge.
The hard cast semi-wadcutter bullet is built for straight-line penetration. Unlike jacketed hollow points that expand and slow down, hard cast lead punches deep through muscle and bone. At 1,190 ft-lbs, this load puts the .45 Colt into territory that overlaps with the .44 Magnum. Its sibling, the DoubleTap Hunter 255gr HCSW at standard pressure (975 fps, 538 ft-lbs), uses the same bullet at roughly half the energy. The +P version here is in a completely different class. The 360gr DoubleTap HCSLD +P trades some velocity for an even heavier bullet at 1,200 fps and 1,151 ft-lbs.
This load is built for hunting medium to large game with a heavy-frame .45 Colt revolver. Deer and hogs at revolver distances are well within its capability, and the deep penetration of the hard cast bullet means it can reach vitals through heavy bone and muscle on larger animals. It also works as a serious woods-carry defense load against black bear. The hard cast design minimizes bullet deformation, so it won't plug up with material and stop short. If you carry a Ruger Blackhawk or similar gun in bear country, this is one of the hardest-hitting .45 Colt loads available.
