Product Overview
Speer Lawman's 125gr TMJ is a standard-pressure .38 Special training round built for volume practice. At 863 fps and 208 ft-lbs, it produces moderate recoil that most shooters can manage comfortably across long range sessions. The 125gr bullet weight sits between the common 130gr and 110gr options, and it pairs well with shooters who carry 125gr Gold Dot defensive loads and want a ballistic match for practice.
The total metal jacket design covers the entire bullet, including the base. That enclosed base is the main advantage over standard FMJ, which leaves the lead core exposed at the rear. When powder gases hit an exposed lead base, they aerosolize lead particles into the air. TMJ eliminates that problem, which makes this load a better choice for indoor ranges with ventilation concerns. Shooting instructors who spend hours on the line every week benefit the most from reduced lead exposure.
Speer builds the Lawman line at their factory in Lewiston, Idaho, using CCI primers and their own TMJ bullets. The standard-pressure loading means it is safe in any .38 Special revolver, including older models and lightweight alloy-frame snubnoses where +P loads accelerate wear. The brass cases are boxer-primed and reloadable for handloaders who want to stretch their budget further.
- TMJ bullet covers the entire lead core including the base, cutting airborne lead exposure for indoor range use
- Standard pressure is safe in all .38 Special revolvers, including older and alloy-frame models
- 125gr weight pairs with Speer Gold Dot 125gr defensive loads for matched training
- Moderate recoil at 863 fps and 208 ft-lbs allows comfortable high-volume practice
- 125gr is a less common weight for .38 Special, with fewer defensive load options to match compared to 158gr
- Costs more than budget FMJ options from Magtech or Fiocchi
- 208 ft-lbs of energy may feel too mild for shooters who carry +P defensive loads and want matched recoil
