Hornady built the Critical Defense Lite specifically for shooters who find standard defensive loads uncomfortable to fire in small .38 Special revolvers. The 90gr FTX bullet at 1,200 fps produces noticeably less recoil than 125gr or 158gr alternatives. That reduced kick makes practice sessions more productive and helps recoil-sensitive shooters maintain accuracy under stress. The pink tip and "Lite" branding make this easy to identify and separate from full-power carry loads.

Despite the lighter bullet, the 90gr FTX still generates 288 ft-lbs of muzzle energy thanks to its higher velocity. The polymer-tipped hollow point initiates expansion reliably even through clothing barriers, using the same FTX technology that Hornady puts in the standard Critical Defense line. This is a real defensive round with reduced recoil, not a training substitute or target load dressed up in defensive packaging.

This load makes the most sense for elderly shooters, those with hand injuries or arthritis, or anyone whose grip strength limits their ability to manage recoil. It also works well as a first defensive load for newer shooters who have not yet built up tolerance for snappier ammunition. The standard-pressure rating keeps it safe in all .38 Special revolvers, and the nickel-plated brass holds up well through extended carry without tarnishing.
