Product Overview
Hornady Critical Defense +P 110gr FTX takes a different approach to .38 Special self-defense. Instead of a heavier bullet at moderate speed, Hornady went lighter and faster. The 110gr FTX bullet exits at 1,090 fps with 290 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, which is the highest energy figure among common .38 Special +P defensive loads. The FTX bullet has a polymer tip that fills the hollow point cavity, preventing clothing and debris from clogging the opening. When the bullet hits tissue, the polymer tip is driven rearward into the lead core, forcing the bullet to expand from the inside out.
The polymer tip design makes this load particularly effective from short-barreled revolvers. Traditional hollow points lose expansion reliability as velocity drops from shorter barrels. The FTX's mechanical expansion system works at lower velocities because it doesn't rely solely on hydraulic pressure to open the bullet. From a 2-inch barrel, this load still runs over 950 fps, and the polymer tip ensures the cavity stays clear through multiple layers of clothing. Hornady loads the nickel-plated cases with propellant chosen for low flash, which matters for defensive shootings that often happen in low light.
This load is well-matched to lightweight carry revolvers like the Smith & Wesson 642 or Ruger LCR. The 110gr bullet weight generates less felt recoil than 125gr or 130gr +P loads despite the higher velocity. Follow-up shots are faster and the gun settles back on target more quickly. The tradeoff is less penetration depth than heavier bullets. In gel testing, the FTX typically reaches 12-13 inches, which meets the low end of the FBI standard. Shooters who prioritize expansion reliability and recoil management over raw penetration depth will find this load fits their needs well.
- 290 ft-lbs of muzzle energy is the highest among common .38 Special +P defensive loads
- Polymer FTX tip prevents clogging and guarantees expansion even through heavy clothing
- Low-flash propellant reduces night blindness in low-light defensive situations
- 110gr bullet produces less felt recoil than heavier +P loads for faster follow-up shots
- Nickel-plated cases resist corrosion and allow quick visual chamber checks
- Penetration depth of 12-13 inches in gel barely meets the FBI minimum standard
- Light 110gr bullet loses energy faster at distance than 125gr or 130gr alternatives
- Premium pricing comparable to Gold Dot and Hydra-Shok Deep
