Product Overview

Black Hills built this 148gr hollow-base wadcutter for one thing: punching perfectly round holes in paper targets. The flat nose cuts clean scoring rings that are easy to read at distance, and the 700 fps velocity keeps recoil soft enough for extended practice sessions. Bullseye competitors and NRA precision pistol shooters rely on this type of load because scoring disputes disappear when every hole has a crisp, measurable edge.

The hollow-base design lets the soft lead skirt expand into the rifling under pressure, which improves the gas seal and tightens groups. At 700 fps from a 4-inch barrel, this load produces minimal muzzle flip and allows fast sight recovery between shots. That combination of accuracy and low recoil makes it a favorite for timed and rapid-fire stages where follow-up shots matter as much as the first round.

Outside of formal competition, this wadcutter works well for general range practice in any .38 Special revolver. The mild report and light push make it comfortable for newer shooters learning trigger control and sight alignment. Brass cases from Black Hills are well-formed and consistent, so reloaders often save this brass for their own match loads.

Strengths
  • Cuts perfectly round holes in paper for easy, dispute-free scoring
  • Hollow-base design seals the bore and improves accuracy
  • Very mild recoil at 700 fps allows fast follow-up shots
  • Quality brass cases hold up well for reloading
Limitations
  • 700 fps velocity limits effective range to short distances
  • Pure lead wadcutter can leave bore fouling after high-volume sessions
  • Not suitable for self-defense or anything beyond paper targets
  • Higher cost per round than bulk FMJ practice ammo
