Product Overview
Federal's Fusion 165-grain .30-06 load fires a molecularly bonded soft point at 2790 fps, generating 2852 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. The Fusion process electrochemically bonds the jacket to the core at the molecular level, which is a different approach than mechanical locks or soldered bonds. The result is a bullet that holds together through tough impacts. The .454 G1 ballistic coefficient is among the highest in this weight class for a non-tipped design.
The 165-grain weight splits the difference between flat-shooting 150s and hard-hitting 180s. Federal engineered pressure grooves into the jacket that control how the bullet mushrooms. This gives the Fusion predictable expansion across a wide velocity window. The bonded core stays intact through shoulder bones and heavy hide on elk-sized animals. On broadside deer hits, the bullet still opens fast enough to dump energy in the vitals without penciling through.
This load earns its keep on mixed-bag Western hunts. Sight in for mule deer across a canyon, and it carries enough mass for an elk tag on the same trip. The 165-grain weight generates moderate recoil that most shooters handle well during extended range sessions. It also performs reliably in cold weather, where some non-bonded bullets can behave unpredictably. Hunters who want one load for all North American big game up to elk will find this hard to beat.
- Molecular bonding process creates stronger core-jacket adhesion than mechanical locking systems, resulting in high weight retention on tough angled shots
- G1 BC of .454 outperforms the Winchester Super-X Power-Point (.341) and standard Remington Core-Lokt (.338) by a wide margin at 165 grains
- Pressure grooves in the jacket control expansion rate, giving consistent mushrooming from 100 to 400 yards
- Versatile enough for deer, elk, and black bear without switching loads between species
- 10-30 fps slower at the muzzle than competing 165-grain loads from Winchester and Remington, which slightly steepens the trajectory
- Bonded construction can over-penetrate thin-skinned game like pronghorn, wasting energy beyond the animal
- Sits in a pricing gap above budget soft points but below true premium controlled-expansion rounds
