Product Overview
PMC Bronze loads a 165gr jacketed hollow point in .40 S&W at 1,040 fps, generating 396 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. PMC manufactures this ammunition in South Korea at their Poongsan Corporation facility, which also produces military ammunition for the South Korean armed forces. The brass case uses standard boxer primers and is reloadable. The 165gr JHP uses a conventional copper jacket with an exposed lead tip and a hollow point cavity designed for expansion in soft tissue.
The 165gr weight is a popular middle ground in .40 S&W, splitting the difference between the snap of a 155gr round and the push of a 180gr load. PMC's velocity of 1,040 fps is conservative compared to premium 165gr loads. The Remington Golden Saber 165gr runs 1,150 fps with the same bullet weight, a gap of 110 fps that translates to about 88 fewer ft-lbs of energy from the PMC. That lower velocity means the PMC Bronze produces softer recoil and may be more comfortable during extended range sessions, but the JHP expansion could be less reliable at the lower velocity threshold.
PMC Bronze JHP is best suited as an economical hollow point for shooters who want defensive-type ammunition without paying premium prices. It works for a backup gun that stays in a safe, a range training load that mimics the weight and feel of carry ammo, or as a budget defensive option where the shooter accepts the trade-off of a simpler bullet design. The consistent quality from Poongsan's military-grade production line means ignition and feeding reliability are solid, even if the bullet itself is not engineered to the same standard as bonded or all-copper alternatives.
- Budget-friendly price point puts JHP ammunition within reach for shooters who otherwise might carry FMJ
- 165gr weight is a comfortable middle ground between snappy 155gr loads and heavy 180gr options
- Manufactured on Poongsan Corporation's military production lines, which provides reliable primer ignition and consistent case dimensions
- Softer recoil than premium 165gr loads due to the lower 1,040 fps velocity
- 1,040 fps is 110 fps slower than the Golden Saber 165gr, which may reduce expansion reliability at the lower end of the velocity envelope
- 396 ft-lbs of energy trails most other .40 S&W defensive loads in this group
- Conventional JHP without bonded core or engineered expansion cavity, so barrier performance will be inconsistent
- Plain brass case offers no corrosion resistance advantage over nickel-plated premium options
