Product Overview

Magtech loads a 180gr jacketed hollow point in .40 S&W at 990 fps, producing 392 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Magtech manufactures this ammunition at the CBC (Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos) facility in Brazil, one of the largest ammunition plants in the Western Hemisphere. The brass case uses standard boxer primers and is fully reloadable. At 990 fps, this is the slowest 180gr .40 S&W load in the current defensive lineup, running 25 fps below the Blazer Brass and Golden Saber 180gr offerings that clock 1,015 fps.

The lower velocity means less felt recoil than other 180gr loads, and that difference is noticeable in lighter pistols. Magtech's JHP uses a conventional copper jacket with a straightforward hollow point cavity. There are no special features like bonded cores, spiral nose cuts, or anti-clog designs. The bullet will expand in bare gelatin at these velocities, but shooters should not expect the same through-barrier consistency that engineered premium bullets deliver. What Magtech brings instead is a very low per-round cost for new-production brass-cased JHP ammunition.

This load fits shooters who want hollow points loaded in a home defense pistol at the lowest possible cost. It is a practical choice for a gun that sits in a safe or nightstand and may never be fired in anger. Magtech JHP also works well as an inexpensive way to confirm that a pistol feeds hollow points reliably before switching to a premium carry load. Shooters who own multiple .40 S&W pistols and want JHP ammunition in all of them without spending premium prices on every gun will find Magtech covers the secondary and tertiary firearms while the primary carry gun gets a top-tier load.

Strengths
  • Typically the least expensive new-production brass-cased JHP available in .40 S&W
  • Softest recoil among the 180gr loads at 990 fps, which makes it comfortable for recoil-sensitive shooters
  • Manufactured at CBC's high-volume Brazilian facility, one of the largest ammo plants in the Americas, with reliable quality control
  • Reloadable brass cases offer value for handloaders who want to recycle the components
Limitations
  • 990 fps is the slowest velocity among these .40 S&W defensive loads, which may reduce hollow point expansion reliability in tissue
  • 392 ft-lbs of energy is near the bottom of the group, trailing the Remington HTP 155gr by over 100 ft-lbs
  • Conventional JHP design without bonded core or barrier-optimized features means inconsistent performance through heavy clothing or intermediate barriers
  • No nickel-plated case, so long-term storage in a humid safe or holster may cause tarnishing
