Product Overview
Hornady Custom 155gr XTP is the lightest and fastest .40 S&W defensive load in the Hornady lineup. At 1,180 fps and 479 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, it hits nearly as hard as many 165gr loads while producing a noticeably flatter trajectory. The lighter bullet reaches the target faster and drops less at extended distances, which matters in the rare defensive scenario that plays out beyond 15 yards. The XTP bullet's staged expansion works well at higher velocities, where it opens reliably without fragmenting.
The 155gr weight is the original .40 S&W bullet weight from the caliber's 1990 introduction. It was designed to replicate 9mm NATO exterior ballistics with a larger-diameter bullet. The faster velocity helps compensate for the shorter sight radius on compact pistols, and the reduced bullet mass means less muzzle flip between shots. Shooters who find 180gr .40 loads too punchy in compact frames will notice a real difference with this load.
Concealed carry and personal defense are the natural applications. The Hornady Custom line uses the same XTP bullet found in American Gunner but loads it lighter and faster for different terminal performance. The brass cases are reloadable, and the standard-pressure loading runs safely in any .40 S&W pistol. This load appeals to shooters who prefer velocity and energy transfer over heavy-bullet penetration depth. It pairs well with full-size and compact .40 S&W pistols where the higher velocity can be fully developed in the barrel.
- 1,180 fps and 479 ft-lbs make it the fastest and hardest-hitting XTP load in .40 S&W
- 155gr weight reduces muzzle flip for faster follow-up shots compared to 180gr loads
- Flatter trajectory at defensive distances due to the higher velocity
- Brass cases are reloadable and the standard-pressure load is safe in all .40 S&W pistols
- Lighter bullet penetrates less deeply than 165gr and 180gr options in gel testing
- Higher velocity generates more muzzle flash and blast in enclosed spaces
- Non-bonded XTP may lose jacket material through auto glass and other hard barriers
- No polymer tip or nickel-plated brass, so it lacks the barrier and corrosion features of Hornady's Critical line
- 155gr is an uncommon weight with limited selection if you want to compare across brands
