Product Overview
Hornady Critical Duty 175gr is built to pass the FBI barrier protocol, and it does. The FlexLock bullet uses a polymer tip like Critical Defense but adds an InterLock band that mechanically locks the jacket to the core. This prevents the jacket separation that can happen when bullets punch through auto glass, plywood, or sheet metal at high velocity. At 1,010 fps and 396 ft-lbs, the 175gr load is calibrated for full-size duty pistols with 4-inch or longer barrels. Law enforcement agencies that need consistent penetration through all five FBI barrier types will find this load meets the standard.
The 175gr weight is unusual for .40 S&W. It splits the difference between the common 165gr and 180gr options, and Hornady chose it to optimize the balance between penetration depth and expansion diameter in barrier testing. The heavier bullet at moderate velocity punches deeper through intermediate barriers than lighter, faster loads. The nickel-plated brass and sealed primer add moisture resistance for extended carry in duty holsters through all weather conditions.
Duty carry and armed professional use is the primary fit. Critical Duty was not designed for pocket pistols or short-barreled compacts. Hornady recommends barrels of 4 inches or longer to achieve the velocities their testing was built around. If you carry a Glock 22, SIG P229, or S&W M&P40 full-size in a duty holster, this load matches your gun. For off-duty carry in a smaller frame, look at Critical Defense instead.
- FlexLock bullet with InterLock band passes all five FBI barrier protocol tests
- 175gr weight is optimized specifically for barrier penetration depth and expansion balance
- Sealed primer and nickel-plated brass add weather resistance for extended duty carry
- Polymer tip prevents hollow point clogging while the InterLock band prevents jacket separation
- Requires a 4-inch or longer barrel to reach design velocities, limiting its use in compact pistols
- 396 ft-lbs of energy is modest for .40 S&W due to the conservative 1,010 fps velocity
- 175gr weight is uncommon, so switching between brands requires re-zeroing for point-of-impact shift
- More expensive than non-barrier-rated alternatives like Critical Defense or standard XTP loads
