Product Overview
Federal's Fusion line loads a 158gr bonded soft point at 1,240 fps with 539 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. The Fusion bullet uses an electrochemical process to bond the jacket directly to the core at the molecular level. This is different from the mechanical crimping or soldering used in most bonded bullets. The result is a bullet that holds together through heavy bone and muscle without shedding jacket fragments. The 158gr weight gives it enough sectional density to penetrate deeply on deer-size game.
Federal originally designed the Fusion line for deer hunters who wanted affordable bonded-core performance. Most bonded bullets carry a premium price, but the Fusion typically costs less than offerings from Barnes or Hornady. The skived tip on the soft point initiates expansion at moderate velocities, which matters in .357 Mag where barrel length determines how much speed the bullet actually carries. From a 4-inch revolver, velocity drops below the listed spec. From a lever-action rifle's 16-20 inch barrel, the bullet picks up significant speed and the bonded core handles the higher impact velocity without breaking apart.
This is a hunting load for whitetail deer at ranges under 100 yards. The .357 Mag does not carry enough energy for ethical shots much past that distance, but within its envelope this Fusion bullet performs well. The bonded core keeps the expanded bullet in one piece through the ribs and shoulder, which creates a better wound channel than a standard soft point that may fragment. Hunters who carry a lever-action .357 for deer season in dense timber or swamp will get reliable terminal performance. It also works as a field load for dispatching hogs or feral pigs at close range where penetration through tough hide and heavy bone matters.
- Electrochemically bonded core prevents jacket separation on shoulder bones and heavy muscle tissue
- The 158gr bullet has the highest sectional density among common .357 Mag hunting weights, which aids deep penetration
- Priced below other bonded hunting bullets like Barnes VOR-TX while offering similar weight retention
- The skived soft point expands reliably at the moderate velocities typical from both revolvers and lever guns
- At 1,240 fps, this is one of the slower .357 Mag loads, generating less energy than the Hornady LEVERevolution's 645 ft-lbs
- The flat-nose soft point sheds velocity quickly downrange, limiting effective hunting range compared to the FTX's polymer tip
- Standard brass cases without nickel plating can tarnish in humid hunting environments
- The moderate velocity may not produce full expansion from short-barrel revolvers under 4 inches
