About This Firearm
The Mossberg Patriot Synthetic is a black-stocked bolt-action .350 Legend built for deer hunting in straight-wall seasons. Mossberg no longer makes this configuration, so it is a used buy. Its LBA trigger is set by the owner anywhere from 2 to 7 lbs with a screwdriver.
Weaver-style bases are on the receiver and nothing else is, so rings and glass are the purchase and there are no irons to fall back on. The 22-inch barrel is fluted with a recessed match crown and the bolt is spiral fluted. Length of pull is a fixed 13.75 inches, and the muzzle is unthreaded, which rules out the suppressor that suits this cartridge's subsonic loads.
If you're cross-shopping, the Winchester XPR has an MSRP of $659.99 for the same barrel length and twist, is 0.25 lbs heavier, and adds a bolt unlock button and a magazine that drops free. A used Ruger American Ranch goes the other way, with a 16.38-inch threaded barrel and a 12.5-inch stock built for a blind or a smaller shooter. Mossberg's current Patriot Synthetic rifles are different configurations, so a spare magazine or a replacement stock for this one comes off the used market.

Strengths & Limitations
- The drop box magazine comes out of the rifle instead of being cycled empty through the action, which is the safer way to unload in a stand.
- The stock is pillar bedded in aluminum and symmetrical, with deep contoured grip wells, so it holds the action square and works the same way in left or right hands.
- The forend is flat-bottomed with dual swivel studs, so a bipod and a sling can both stay on the rifle.
- Length of pull is fixed and nothing on the stock adjusts, so the fit is whatever the rifle comes with.
- On a used rifle the bases have already been torqued by somebody else, so pull them and check the threads before mounting anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the barrel threaded for a suppressor?
No. The muzzle is a recessed match crown with no threads. The Ruger American Ranch is the rifle in this chambering that arrived threaded 1/2-28 with a protector fitted.
How many rounds does it hold?
Four in the drop box magazine plus one in the chamber. That matches the Winchester XPR and is one fewer in the magazine than the Ruger American Ranch.
What should I check on a used one?
Set the trigger first, because the adjustment screw is wherever the previous owner left it. Then look at the crown, the bases and the magazine, since a lost magazine is harder to replace now than it was when the rifle was current.
