Product Overview

The Nosler Varmageddon .243 Winchester fires a 55-grain flat-base tipped bullet at 3700 feet per second, delivering 1672 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. This is pure varmint ammunition—the lightest common .243 load, built for maximum velocity and explosive terminal performance. The polymer tip and thin jacket create violent expansion on prairie dogs and groundhogs while the flat-base design provides excellent accuracy.

Nosler designed the Varmageddon specifically for high-volume varmint shooting. The special lead-alloy core fragments aggressively on impact, preventing ricochets and ensuring instant incapacitation on small targets. At 3700 fps, trajectory is nearly flat to 200 yards, making holdovers unnecessary for most varmint shots. The flat-base design typically outperforms boat tails at shorter ranges where most varmint engagements occur.

This ammunition dominates prairie dog towns and groundhog fields where shot volume is high and targets are small. The explosive fragmentation means no exit wounds and no ricochets—important safety considerations in agricultural settings. The 55-grain weight minimizes recoil, allowing shooters to spot their own impacts and make rapid follow-up shots. This is not deer ammunition under any circumstances—it's purpose-built for varmints and performs that role exceptionally.

Strengths
  • Extremely high velocity of 3700 fps provides the flattest trajectory of any .243 Winchester load
  • Explosive fragmentation eliminates ricochet concerns and ensures instant kills on small game
  • Minimal recoil allows spotting impacts and making fast follow-up shots on prairie dog towns
  • Flat-base design delivers excellent short-range accuracy where most varmint shots occur
Limitations
  • BC of 0.252 means rapid velocity loss and significant drift beyond 250 yards
  • 55-grain weight is completely inadequate for deer or any medium game—varmints only
  • Fragmenting design provides zero penetration, making this unsuitable for predators over 20 pounds
  • Premium Nosler pricing costs more than basic varmint ammunition for high-volume shooting
