Hornady's Critical Defense .45 ACP sends a 185-grain FTX bullet at 1,000 fps, generating 411 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That's a lighter and faster approach compared to the standard 230-grain loads most shooters associate with .45 ACP. The nickel-plated brass case resists corrosion from sweat and humidity, and it feeds smoothly in tight chambers. This combination of reduced bullet weight and higher velocity gives the round a flatter trajectory at close defensive distances.

The FTX bullet uses a red polymer tip seated inside the hollow point cavity. That tip does two things: it prevents the cavity from clogging with fabric or debris, and it drives rearward on impact to start expansion. Standard hollow points can plug up when fired through heavy denim or layered winter clothing, turning them into slow round-nose bullets. The FTX design avoids that problem.
