Product Overview

Federal's Gold Medal line is their competition-grade tier, and this .45 ACP load shows it. The 185-grain bullet uses a semi-wadcutter profile wrapped in a full metal jacket. It leaves the muzzle at just 770 fps with 244 ft-lbs of energy. That is slow by .45 ACP standards. Standard 230-grain loads run 830-850 fps. The reduced velocity is intentional. Federal designed this load for precision pistol shooters who need soft recoil and tight velocity spreads, not raw power.

The semi-wadcutter shape is the real differentiator. A standard round-nose FMJ pushes through paper and leaves a ragged, hard-to-read tear. The flat shoulder on an SWC punches a clean, perfectly round hole. When match scores come down to whether a shot broke the line on a scoring ring, that clean hole matters. The light bullet weight also shifts the recoil impulse. Instead of the slow push that a heavy 230-grain load produces, you get a quick, soft bump that settles faster. Competitive shooters can get back on target for follow-up shots with less effort.

This is a purpose-built competition load. NRA Bullseye shooters have used it for decades because the format demands precision at 25 and 50 yards from a one-handed stance. It also works well in other organized pistol disciplines where .45 ACP is required or where shooters want the scoring advantage of wadcutter-style holes. Recreational shooters who want an extremely soft-shooting .45 ACP range load will appreciate it too, though the slower velocity means the point of impact will sit differently than standard-weight practice ammo.

Strengths
  • The semi-wadcutter profile punches clean, round holes in paper targets, making shot placement easier to score than the ragged tears left by round-nose FMJ loads like the Speer Lawman or Norma Range & Training
  • At 185 grains and 770 fps, recoil is noticeably lighter than 230-grain loads running 830-850 fps, which allows faster follow-up shots in timed competition stages
  • Gold Medal production standards deliver tight velocity spreads from shot to shot, so point of impact stays predictable across a full match
  • The lighter recoil impulse is a quick bump rather than a slow roll, and the muzzle settles faster between shots than it does with heavier bullets
Limitations
  • 770 fps is marginal for cycling some .45 ACP semi-autos, particularly guns with heavy recoil springs or tight-fitting slides that need more momentum to run reliably
  • The semi-wadcutter nose shape can catch on feed ramps in certain pistols, especially older 1911 designs without a polished or throated barrel
  • Point of impact shifts significantly compared to standard 230-grain training loads, so this is a poor choice for practice sessions with a carry gun zeroed for heavier ammunition
  • 244 ft-lbs of muzzle energy is well below the 352-371 ft-lbs range of the Speer Lawman and Norma offerings, limiting this load strictly to paper targets and competition
