Product Overview

Underwood's .380 Auto 68gr Xtreme Defender fires a solid copper fluted bullet at 1,300 fps, producing 255 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. This is not a hollow point. The bullet is machined from a single piece of copper by Lehigh Defense with deep flutes cut into the nose. These flutes redirect tissue outward through fluid dynamics, creating a wound channel wider than the bullet itself without relying on expansion. The nickel-plated brass case handles feeding and corrosion resistance.

The biggest advantage of this design is that it cannot clog. Traditional hollow points can fill with clothing fibers, drywall, or other debris and fail to expand, essentially becoming an expensive FMJ. The Xtreme Defender's flutes are machined into solid copper. There is nothing to plug, nothing to collapse, nothing to fail. The wound mechanism works the same whether the bullet passes through bare gel, four layers of denim, or a leather jacket. This consistency is why the design has gained a following among concealed carriers who worry about real-world barrier performance.

This load fits shooters who want a different approach to .380 self-defense. At 68 grains, it is lighter than standard 90-95gr loads, which means noticeably less felt recoil in small pistols. The tradeoff is reduced momentum, so penetration depth depends more on velocity retention than bullet weight. The solid copper construction also makes it lead-free, which is a factor for shooters who practice at indoor ranges with lead restrictions. It feeds in any .380 pistol without the feeding issues that some JHP designs cause in finicky pocket guns.

Strengths
  • Solid copper fluted design cannot clog with clothing or debris, unlike traditional hollow points that may fail to expand through heavy fabric
  • 1,300 fps from a 68gr bullet produces less felt recoil than heavier 90-95gr defensive loads in lightweight pocket pistols
  • Lead-free solid copper construction is safe for indoor ranges and jurisdictions with lead ammunition restrictions
  • Feeds reliably in .380 pistols that have trouble cycling hollow point designs due to the bullet's smooth, non-cavity profile
  • 255 ft-lbs of muzzle energy is competitive with standard-pressure JHPs like the Winchester PDX1 at 211 ft-lbs
Limitations
  • 68gr bullet has significantly less momentum than 90-95gr loads, which can reduce penetration depth at lower velocities
  • Wound mechanism depends on velocity to drive the fluid dynamic effect, so performance may drop off faster from very short barrels
  • Higher cost per round than conventional JHP defensive ammunition from major manufacturers
  • Limited independent gel testing compared to established JHP designs like the Hornady XTP or Federal HST
