Product Overview

CCI's Blazer Aluminum line loads this .380 Auto with a 95-grain TMJ bullet at 945 fps, generating 188 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. The TMJ (Total Metal Jacket) is different from a standard FMJ. The copper jacket wraps completely around the bullet base, which means less exposed lead and reduced airborne lead vapor at the firing line. The aluminum case is the defining feature here. It is lighter than brass, non-reloadable, and Berdan-primed. You shoot it and toss it.

CCI makes the Blazer Aluminum line at their facility in Lewiston, Idaho. The aluminum case keeps production costs down, and those savings get passed along at the register. The 945 fps velocity sits right in the middle of the .380 FMJ pack, faster than budget options like the Armscor (920 fps) and close to the Fiocchi (960 fps). One real advantage is the TMJ bullet design. If you shoot at indoor ranges regularly, the fully enclosed base means less lead contamination in the air. Some ranges actually prefer or require TMJ ammunition for that reason. The aluminum case also will not corrode like steel, so storage is not a concern.

This is an indoor-friendly range round built for volume shooting. The TMJ bullet and aluminum case make it a smart pick for shooters who train indoors and want to minimize lead exposure. It works well for standard practice drills, accuracy work, and staying proficient with your .380 carry gun. The non-reloadable case is the obvious downside if you handload, but if you just want to show up to the range, shoot, and leave without collecting brass, the Blazer Aluminum keeps things simple. CCI's track record for reliability means you are unlikely to deal with duds or feeding issues in most modern .380 pistols.

Strengths
  • TMJ bullet fully encloses the lead base, reducing airborne lead exposure at indoor ranges
  • Aluminum case is lighter and cheaper to produce than brass, keeping the price down
  • 945 fps velocity is in the middle of the .380 pack and cycles reliably in most modern pistols
  • Made by CCI in the USA with consistent quality control and low dud rates
  • Aluminum will not corrode in storage the way steel-cased ammo can
Limitations
  • Aluminum case is non-reloadable, which is a deal-breaker for handloaders
  • 188 ft-lbs of muzzle energy is average, falling behind the Fiocchi 95gr FMJ at 194 ft-lbs
  • Some shooters report that aluminum cases feel different during extraction compared to brass
  • Not appropriate for defensive carry due to the TMJ bullet design
