Product Overview
Black Hills loads their .380 Auto HoneyBadger with a 60gr solid copper fluted bullet at 1,150 fps, generating 176 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Like the Xtreme Defender, this bullet is machined by Lehigh Defense from a single piece of copper. The fluted nose channels tissue outward through fluid dynamics rather than traditional hollow point expansion. The brass case is standard, not nickel-plated, though Black Hills is known for tight quality standards across their ammunition line.
The HoneyBadger's advantage is the same barrier-blind performance found in other Lehigh Defense designs. It will not clog with clothing, drywall, or any other material that commonly defeats hollow points. Where the HoneyBadger differs from the Underwood Xtreme Defender is weight and speed. At 60 grains, this is the lightest defensive .380 load on the market. That means the least recoil of any serious .380 defense round. For shooters who struggle with snap and muzzle rise in small pocket guns, that difference is noticeable shot to shot.
This round works best for deep concealment carry where you prioritize fast follow-up shots and consistent terminal effect through barriers. The 176 ft-lbs of energy is the lowest of the specialty .380 loads, so you are trading raw power for shootability and reliability. Black Hills has a strong reputation among law enforcement and military contract shooters, which adds some confidence in the load's consistency. The lead-free copper construction also clears it for indoor range practice and areas with environmental lead restrictions. If you want the softest-shooting .380 defensive load that still creates a meaningful wound channel, this is the option.
- Lightest defensive .380 load at 60gr, producing the least recoil and fastest follow-up shots in small pocket pistols
- Solid copper fluted bullet cannot clog with fabric or debris, maintaining consistent performance through any barrier
- Lead-free construction is compliant with indoor range rules and environmental lead restrictions
- Black Hills has a strong quality control reputation from their law enforcement and military contract work
- 176 ft-lbs of muzzle energy is the lowest of the specialty .380 defensive loads, well below the Underwood Xtreme Defender at 255 ft-lbs
- 60gr bullet carries less momentum than 90-95gr loads, which limits penetration depth if velocity drops
- Black Hills ammunition has limited retail availability and typically costs more than comparable loads from larger manufacturers
- Relatively new bullet technology with less field data and independent testing than established JHP designs
