Product Overview
Winchester's USA Ready Defense line uses a Hex-Vent hollow point insert that prevents the cavity from plugging with fabric or debris during penetration. The 170gr bullet at 1,250 fps generates 590 ft-lbs of energy, which puts it firmly in full-power 10mm territory. The lighter bullet weight produces a flatter trajectory and faster follow-up shots compared to 180gr and 200gr loads in this caliber. Winchester loads this on their commercial line with standard brass cases.
The Hex-Vent insert is a small polymer piece seated in the hollow point cavity. When the bullet strikes soft tissue, hydraulic pressure pushes the insert out and the bullet expands normally. When the bullet hits clothing or wallboard first, the insert keeps debris out of the cavity so expansion still occurs. This approach solves the same problem as Remington's brass jacket but through a different mechanism. Both work. The Winchester option runs faster and lighter.
Shooters who prefer a lighter, faster 10mm defensive load will appreciate the 170gr weight. It produces less felt recoil impulse than 200gr loads and cycles reliably in semi-automatic actions. The 590 ft-lbs of energy still exceeds most .45 ACP and .40 S&W defensive loads by a wide margin.
