About This Firearm
FN America designed the SRP G2 as a patrol-ready carbine, and the feature list reads like a department armorer's wish list. The 16-inch alloy steel barrel gets a manganese phosphate finish instead of the nitride treatment on the cheaper Guardian, and folding metal front and rear sights come installed from the factory. The A2 compensator directs gas and muzzle blast upward, which reduces muzzle rise during rapid fire but does add flash signature compared to a flash hider.
At 100 oz (6.25 lbs), the SRP G2 sits between FN's own Guardian at 105.6 oz and the TAC3 at 112 oz. The 6.3 lb mil-spec single-stage trigger is on the heavier side of standard, which is typical for a duty-oriented rifle where a light pull is a liability. The hard-anodized aluminum receivers and manganese phosphate finish match the corrosion resistance profile that law enforcement agencies look for in a patrol gun that rides in a vehicle rack.
If you plan to mount an optic, check your mounting footprint against the Picatinny top rail before buying. The folding front sight sits on the gas block and will co-witness with most red dots at lower-third height, but taller magnified optic mounts may require removing the rear sight to clear the eyepiece. Budget for a rear BUIS with a quick-detach mount if you want both an LPVO and backup irons.
Best For
Strengths & Limitations
- Ships with folding metal front and rear sights installed, making it functional straight out of the box without additional purchases
- Manganese phosphate finish on both the barrel and receivers provides strong corrosion resistance for duty use and vehicle storage
- The 6.3 lb mil-spec trigger pull feels heavy for range work, and most owners report replacing it within the first year
- The A2 pistol grip is a basic mil-spec design that lacks the palm swell and texture of aftermarket options like the BCM Mod 3 found on competing rifles
- The A2 compensator reduces muzzle rise but increases flash and side blast, which is a poor tradeoff for low-light home defense situations

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a red dot co-witness with the factory iron sights?
Yes, most standard-height red dots (like the Aimpoint PRO or Sig Romeo 5) will co-witness at lower-third height with the folding front sight. The rear sight folds flat and clears the optic window. If you mount a magnified LPVO, check that the rear eyepiece bell clears the folded rear sight, as some 1-6x scopes on lower mounts can contact it.
What changed from the original SRP to the SRP G2?
The G2 revision updated the handguard to an M-LOK free-float design, replacing the older drop-in handguard with a fixed front sight base. FN also revised the upper receiver to accept the new rail system and updated the stock to a 6-position collapsible design. The barrel profile and metallurgy stayed the same between generations.
