About This Firearm

Sig built the 716i Tread as the optics-ready, suppressor-ready entry point in the .308 AR-10 market — a direct-impingement rifle with a 16" nitride-treated carbon steel barrel, an M-LOK free-float handguard, and a flat-top upper with a full-length Picatinny rail. At 136 oz (8.5 lbs) with a 16" barrel, it is lighter than the Aero Precision M5's 173.6 oz and meaningfully shorter than the Springfield M1A Standard's 44.33" overall length. The 1:10 twist handles the 168–175gr match loads common in .308 precision shooting. The barrel is threaded 5/8x24 with a flash hider installed — suppressor-ready as shipped.

The 716i uses a rifle-length direct-impingement gas system, not the short-stroke piston design Sig used on the earlier 716 and 716 G2. Sig moved to direct impingement on the 716i to lighten the rifle (down from 9.5 lbs on the 716 G2 Patrol to 8.5 lbs on the 716i) and lower price, while keeping the M-LOK handguard, ambi controls, and flat-top rail. The 716i also ships with an adjustable polymer stock and no iron sights — this is a rifle designed to have an optic on it from day one. The flat-top rail and M-LOK handguard give buyers flexibility on where glass, lights, and other accessories mount. Trigger pull spec is not published; owners report the stock single-stage trigger is adequate but not a selling point.

The 716i Tread is a complete optics-ready, suppressor-ready .308 platform at its price point and does not require immediate upgrades. The FN SCAR 17S is a more refined gas-piston option at significantly higher cost. Within the .308 AR-10 direct-impingement category, the 716i sits opposite the S&W M&P 10 Sport OR — the 716i is heavier but ships with a more complete out-of-the-box configuration; the M&P 10 is lighter but more bare-bones.

Best For

GOOD
Suppressor Host
The 5/8x24 threaded barrel accepts most common .308 suppressors directly, and the flash hider is removable. The 716i runs a rifle-length direct-impingement gas system without an adjustable gas block from the factory — if cycling stiffens up under a suppressor, an aftermarket low-profile adjustable gas block is the standard fix.
GOOD
Precision Shooting
The free-float M-LOK handguard eliminates barrel contact that affects accuracy, and the 1:10 twist barrel handles 168–175gr match loads well. Optics mount directly to the full-length flat-top Picatinny rail — no saddle mount or aftermarket hardware needed.
FAIR
Competition / 3-Gun
At 136 oz (8.5 lbs) the 716i is manageable for stage work, but the stock trigger is not competition-grade. Owners who run it competitively typically swap the trigger group — Geissele SSA-E or similar — before their first match.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • Free-float M-LOK handguard, full-length top rail, threaded 5/8x24 barrel with flash hider, and ambidextrous controls all ship standard — no immediate upgrades needed to run a usable setup.
  • Rifle-length direct-impingement gas system with a lightened bolt carrier group brings the 716i to 8.5 lbs — one pound lighter than Sig's earlier piston-driven 716 G2 Patrol — and accepts standard AR-10 spare-parts and trigger groups.
Limitations
  • Stock trigger pull is not published and community consensus puts the feel as "adequate but unremarkable." If trigger performance matters, budget for an aftermarket trigger group upgrade.
  • Direct-impingement system with no factory-adjustable gas block — suppressed cycling reliability typically needs an aftermarket adjustable gas block, the same upgrade most DI .308s require.
  • Ships with one 20-round magazine and no iron sights — a budget red dot or BUIS set is necessary before the first range trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What optics and accessories fit the Sig 716i Tread?

The 716i has a standard full-length Picatinny top rail — any scope, red dot, or LPVO with standard Picatinny rings will mount directly. The M-LOK handguard accepts M-LOK accessories (lights, grips, bipod mounts, additional rail sections) at any position along its length. Sig does not include iron sights, so if you want a backup iron sight setup, you'll need to add BUIS separately. Most owners run an LPVO like the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x or a Sig TANGO4 in the 1-4x or 1-6x range for a practical .308 setup.

Is the Sig 716i Tread compatible with standard AR-10 parts and magazines?

The 716i uses a rifle-length direct-impingement gas system on a DPMS/SR-25-pattern lower, which means it accepts standard SR-25-pattern magazines — Magpul PMAG 20 LR/SR and similar fit without issue. The trigger group uses a standard AR-pattern fire control pocket, so aftermarket AR-10 trigger groups (Geissele, LaRue, etc.) drop in normally. For BCG and barrel swaps, verify the part is spec'd for the 716i specifically before purchase.

Does the 716i Tread use a gas piston system like the older Sig 716?

No. The original SIG 716 and the 716 G2 used Sig's short-stroke gas-piston operating system. The 716i Tread — the current Tread-branded model — switched to a conventional direct-impingement gas system to reduce weight and price. The "i" suffix denotes the impingement design. If you want Sig's piston-driven 7.62 NATO rifle, you're looking at the legacy 716 G2 or the higher-end MCX SPEAR, not the 716i Tread.
