About This Firearm
The S&W M&P 15-22 Sport is a .22 LR semi-auto built to replicate the AR-15 experience as closely as possible in a rimfire package. The controls, stock, handguard, and manual of arms are identical to a standard AR-15 — same charging handle, same safety selector, same mag release. The rifle exists to give AR-15 shooters trigger time on rimfire ammo cost without changing how the gun runs in their hands.
The 16.5" carbon steel barrel uses a 1:15" twist rate and is threaded 1/2x28 — it accepts standard AR-15 muzzle devices and suppressors directly. Magpul MBUS flip-up sights come installed, and the M-LOK handguard and optic-ready flat top give you the same mounting options as a centerfire AR. At 80 oz (5 lbs), it's lighter than most direct-impingement ARs, which makes it easier to hold in positions for extended drill practice.
The M&P 15-22's real strength is that no other .22 LR rifle this close to the AR price point gives you an actual AR-15 training platform. The Ruger 10/22 Carbine is cheaper and more accurate from the factory, but it doesn't teach you mag changes, selector manipulation, or AR trigger technique. No. This is the most common misconception about the 15-22. The rifle uses proprietary S&W M&P 15-22 magazines — standard AR-15 STANAG magazines do not fit or feed. S&W includes one 25-round magazine; additional factory mags are required to add capacity. No adapter exists to use STANAG mags in the 15-22.
Is the M&P 15-22 accurate enough for target shooting?
Most owners report acceptable accuracy for plinking and casual target work — groups in the 1-2 MOA range at 50 yards with quality bulk ammo. It's not a precision target rifle.
