Product Overview

Wolf WPA 55gr FMJ is the cheapest way to feed a .223 Remington rifle. The steel case and Berdan primer keep manufacturing costs well below brass-cased alternatives. At 3,241 fps, the ballistics match any standard 55gr load. Shooters who measure range time in case quantities rather than box counts will save meaningful money over a year of shooting. If the goal is pure trigger time without concern for brass recovery, Wolf does the job.

High-volume practice and carbine training are where steel-case .223 makes the most financial sense. A shooter burning 500 rounds per month can save hundreds of dollars annually compared to brass-cased alternatives. The polymer coating on the steel case helps with extraction, though some AR-15s with tight chambers may not run it as smoothly as brass. Bolt-action and AK-platform rifles in .223 tend to cycle it without issue.

Wolf is not the right choice for every situation. The steel case is not reloadable, and the Berdan primer makes it impossible to deprimed even if you wanted to try. Some indoor ranges prohibit steel-case ammunition due to the bimetal jacket attracting magnets. Accuracy runs 3-4 MOA in most rifles, which is fine for combat-distance training but not for precision work. The lacquer or polymer coating can build up in chambers during extended sessions, so cleaning between range trips is a good habit.

Strengths
  • Lowest cost per round among all .223 Remington options
  • Ballistic performance matches standard 55gr brass-cased loads
  • Polymer-coated steel case aids extraction in most rifles
Limitations
  • Steel case is not reloadable and Berdan primed
  • Bimetal jacket is banned at many indoor ranges
  • Accuracy is noticeably worse than brass-cased alternatives at 3-4 MOA
  • Can cause increased extractor and chamber wear over time in AR-15s
  • Some tight-chambered rifles experience feeding or extraction failures
