About This Firearm

The Ruger LCP II is the single-stack predecessor to the LCP MAX and remains in production for a reason: simplicity. It weighs 10.6 oz, measures 5.17" overall and 0.75" wide, and holds 6+1 rounds. The 0.75" width makes it the thinnest .380 on the market. It is narrower than the LCP MAX (0.81"), the S&W Bodyguard 2.0 (0.88"), and the Glock G42 (0.98"). For shooters who measure concealment in fractions of an inch, that matters.

The hammer-fired 5.8 lb single-action trigger is identical to the LCP MAX's pull. Integral sights are molded into the slide, which keeps the snag-free profile clean but limits visibility in low light. The S&W Shield EZ has a 4.4 lb trigger and proper adjustable sights, but it weighs 18.5 oz and stretches to 6.7" overall. The Walther CCP M2 offers an optic cut and better sights, but at 19.4 oz and 6.41" it belongs in a different size conversation entirely.

The LCP II's aftermarket is mature. Pocket holsters, belt clips, grip extensions, laser mounts, and replacement sights are available from multiple manufacturers. The LCP platform has been in production since 2008, and the LCP II refined it with a better trigger and last-round slide hold-open in 2016. If 6 rounds is enough and you want the thinnest, most established pocket .380 available, the LCP II still does the job it was built for.

Best For

GOOD
Deep Concealment
At 0.75" wide and 10.6 oz, it is the thinnest production .380 available. It vanishes in a front pocket, cargo pocket, or ankle holster. The smooth, snag-free profile means no sharp edges to catch on fabric during a draw.
GOOD
Backup Gun
The 5.17" length and 3.71" height fit ankle rigs comfortably. At 10.6 oz loaded, it adds almost no weight. The inner trigger safety prevents discharge from bumps or drops without needing a manual safety.
FAIR
Range Training
Manageable for short practice sessions at 7-10 yards. At 10.6 oz, extended range trips will fatigue your hand. The integral sights are adequate for close-range work. Most instructors recommend training with your carry gun, even if the experience is not pleasant for long sessions.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • At 0.75" wide, it is the thinnest .380 Auto pistol in production. The Ruger LCP MAX is 0.81" and the S&W Bodyguard 2.0 is 0.88". In a front pocket, that 0.06-0.13" difference is noticeable against the thigh.
  • The LCP platform has been in production since 2008. Holsters, accessories, and replacement parts are available from more manufacturers than any other pocket .380.
Limitations
  • 6+1 capacity is the lowest in the current .380 pocket gun class. The LCP MAX holds 10 rounds in the same dimensions. The S&W Bodyguard 2.0 holds 12. Both guns weigh within an ounce of the LCP II.
  • Integral sights molded into the slide are difficult to see in low light and cannot be replaced. The LCP MAX ships with a tritium front sight. The Bodyguard 2.0 also includes tritium.
  • Ships with only 1 magazine. The S&W Bodyguard 2.0 and Sig P365-380 both include 2.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy the LCP II or the LCP MAX?

The LCP MAX holds 10 rounds in the same frame size and weighs the same 10.6 oz. It also ships with a tritium front sight. The only reasons to choose the LCP II are if you want the absolute thinnest profile (0.75" vs 0.81") or if you already own LCP II magazines. For most buyers, the LCP MAX is the better option.

Can I add better sights to the LCP II?

Aftermarket options exist but are limited. The integral rear sight is part of the slide and cannot be swapped. Some owners install a small adhesive or dovetail front sight from companies like Galloway Precision. Laser grips from Crimson Trace are the more popular route for improving target acquisition in low light.
