Product Overview
Winchester's PDX1 Defender in .45 Colt pushes a 225gr bonded jacketed hollow point at 850 fps, generating 361 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. The nickel-plated brass case feeds smoothly and resists corrosion, which matters for ammunition that may sit in a holster or nightstand for weeks at a time. The bonded bullet construction keeps the jacket and core together on impact, which means more weight retention and deeper penetration through heavy clothing or barriers.
The bonded core design separates this load from cheaper hollow points that can fragment or shed jacket material before reaching adequate depth. Winchester developed the PDX1 line specifically for defensive situations where the bullet has to perform after passing through drywall, auto glass, or layered fabric. The 225gr weight is lighter than a traditional 250gr .45 Colt bullet, but the higher sectional density of the bonded JHP design compensates with reliable expansion in the 0.60-0.70 inch range.
This load is built for self-defense in revolvers chambered in .45 Colt. It works well in guns like the Ruger Blackhawk, Smith & Wesson Governor, or Taurus Judge (when loaded with .45 Colt rather than .410). The moderate velocity keeps recoil manageable for follow-up shots while still delivering enough energy to stop a threat. Shooters who carry a .45 Colt revolver for home defense or woods carry against two-legged threats will find this is one of the few purpose-built defensive options in the caliber.
- Bonded bullet construction retains weight through barriers and heavy clothing
- Nickel-plated brass resists corrosion for long-term carry or storage
- Moderate 850 fps velocity keeps recoil manageable in lighter revolvers
- One of the few purpose-built defensive hollow points available in .45 Colt
- 850 fps is slower than many competing defensive calibers, limiting energy transfer
- 361 ft-lbs of muzzle energy is on the low end for a large-bore cartridge
- Premium price per round compared to standard .45 Colt loads
- Limited availability since .45 Colt defensive ammo has a smaller market
